Thrunton carpet warehouse fire \’out in three weeks\’

A fire that started at a Northumberland carpet recycling plant more than four months ago could be extinguished in three weeks, the council has said.

The blaze broke out at the site in Thrunton in September, and the council now estimates that about two thirds of the burning material has been put out.

Environment Agency officials have also served an enforcement notice on the owner, Blackwater North East.

This requires it to remove the burned debris currently outside the premises.

The company must then arrange for its disposal, or temporarily store it in secure containers for no longer than 12 months.

\’Good progress\’

The notice could not be served until a significant amount of material was extinguished because the regulations state the operator must be able to comply.

In a residents\’ newsletter, the multi-agency group responsible for dealing with the fire, said that the landowner was working hard on site to tackle it.

It added: \”Progress is good and following a multi-agency site visit last week, we estimate that about two thirds of the burning material has now been extinguished.

\”Our current best estimate is that the fire could be extinguished in about three weeks, if the current rate of progress can be maintained.\”
