Major fire in Leicester Square restaurant

Large plumes of smoke rose above the area close to Shaftesbury Avenue yesterday, which is home to some of London’s most famous theatres.

London Fire Brigade said they fielded more than 20 calls reporting the fire on Lisle Street as it could be seen “from miles around”.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene, and more than 20 fire fighters tackled the blaze, a spokesperson said.

Station manager Charlie Pugsley, who was at the scene, said: “Crews worked really hard in hot conditions to bring the fire under control quickly and prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings.

“The fire involved the restaurant’s ventilation system. Businesses should make sure that their ventilation system is kept clean as build-up of fat and grease within extract filters can lead to a fire.”

The fire was under control by 11am, with fire fighters being called just over an hour earlier.

Nine people were evacuated from the building but no one was injured. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
