Smoke advice over Sherburn-in-Elmet tyre fire clean-up

More smoke will come from a huge tyre fire as clean-up teams begin removing debris, residents have been warned.

The fire, involving more than 15,000 tonnes of tyres, started on 16 January at the Newgen Recycling Centre in Sherburn-in-Elmet near Leeds.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the fire could burn \”for another week\”.

Crews and the firm were removing tyres but the operation would lead to additional smoke, a fire service spokesman said.

One arrest

He added: \”In the main, the fire is being left to burn out. Its size means that any attempt to put out the whole site has the potential to cause pollution in local water courses and the surrounding area because of the amount of water required.

\”However, small amounts of material are being removed and extinguished when it\’s safe to do so.

\”This means there may be some additional smoke over the coming days as some of the material is moved.\”

North Yorkshire Police said a 51-year-old man was arrested and released on bail over the fire.

The police and fire service have begun a joint investigation into the cause of the blaze.
