Sherburn-in-Elmet tyre blaze firefighters remain

Firefighters remain on \”watching brief\” at a blaze that sent up a plume of smoke so thick it could be seen from space.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue warn it could take several days to let the smouldering tyres burn out.

The fire at Newgen Recycling Centre in Sherburn-in-Elmet among 15,000 tonnes of tyres started on Thursday.

A Nasa satellite image showed a column of dark smoke rising above the skies over Yorkshire.

Public Health England has said people should stay away from smoke by closing doors and windows.

It added that anyone with existing medical conditions concerned about the effects of the smoke should contact their GP.
