Foam Extinguishers
Foam fire extinguishers are available in 2ltr, 6ltr and 9ltr options and are suitable for ‘Class A’ and ‘Class B’ fires.
These extinguishers can be used to put out fires involving carbon based materials (e.g. wood, paper, textiles) as well as flammable liquids (e.g. oil, petrol, alcohol) and are therefore ideal where a risk of fires involving both flammable liquids and ‘class A’ combustible materials are present.
These extinguishers are not suitable for fires involving flammable metals, fat (cooking oils), flammable gas and electricity and are ineffective against “running fires” and this must be considered when designing a portable fire extinguisher system.
Maintenance procedures: The ‘Reform Order’ requires that all fire safety equipment be kept in a condition that is fit for purpose and thus requires that all fire safety equipment including fire extinguishers be regularly maintained. It is required in accordance with BS 5306-3:2009 that foam fire extinguishers undergo a basic service with intervals no longer than 12 months and an extended service every five years.
